Project Description
Two consultants, Kirk Robertson and Arne
Martinsen, recently completed an important project in St.
Petersburg, Russia that will have a direct impact on all member
companies doing business with Russia. The general purpose of the
assignment was to collaborate with Russian officials and industry to
rapidly identify solutions for alleviating the Port of Greater St.
Petersburg’s congestion crisis. With a decrease in congestion comes
an increase in the handling capacity of the port. Products will also
be received later in the season as a result of increased handling
capability. All of these outcomes result in one thing: higher
revenue for member companies.
As part of the project, they assisted USDA/ATO
(Moscow) with detailed research and investigations in support of a
plan towards officially influencing improvements for entry
procedures and customs issues. They also analyzed the issue of the
closing of other border points, while investigating other potential
routing options for reefer containers, possibly by-passing the Port
of St. Petersburg.
Ultimately, the goal was to find ways to
decrease port congestion in order to increase the amount of goods
being shipped to Russia. With an increase in the number of goods
being shipped comes an increase in revenue. Along with this increase
in revenue comes the ability to ship more product, which in turn
results in a further increase in revenue.
