MogensMogens Svenstrup

of Coldstar (Denmark) is the new chairman of the IARW European Council. He officially took over from Manuel Cabrera Kabana during the Amsterdam council meeting last month. On April 20, the European members attending the annual IARW Convention in MarcoIsland will gather for an interim meeting. The next Council meeting will be in Paris (France); the provisional date for this meeting is Monday September 15.

 11th Cold chain logistics education program sets new attendance record

Over 160 refrigerated warehouse operators, suppliers, and other industry representatives gathered in Amsterdam last month for the 11th European Cold Chain Logistics Education Program, organized by the Global Cold Chain Alliance. With delegates from 18 European countries, South Africa, Iran, the USA, Canada, and Mexico this 2-day event not only broke last year's attendance record, it also welcomed the highest number of exhibitors in its history. Under the title: "Back 2 basics: Safe, efficient, and profitable cold storage and distribution", there were presentations on strategic and operational subjects, legislative issues, and trends and developments throughout the industry. Special focus sessions featured a range of contributions on Energy Saving & Efficiency and Labor & Productivity.

During the Amsterdam industry networking dinner, IARW European Council Chairman Mogens Svenstrup (Coldstar, Denmark) presented awards to five participants for their shown dedication to and support of the program. F.l.t.r. Svenstrup, Luc Bulcaen (Frigolanda Group, Belgium), João Gaitas (Frigomato, Portugal), Demetrios Stratos (MAVE, Greece), Marcel Ruesink (Tyco FS&BP, Netherlands), and Andrew Baldwin (Reed Boardall Cold Storage, UK).

Pre-Convention & Convention take delegates to New Orleans and Marco Island

From April 19-23, the IARW Annual Convention & Expo takes place in Marco Island, Florida (USA). The program offers keynote addresses, feature presentations, and focus sessions with attention for cold chain opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry, cargo theft,´green' entrepeneurship, energy efficiency, supply chain execution, and much more. New OrleansPrevious to the Convention, a group of 23 warehouse members and spouses from Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia will be in New Orleans for a Pre-Convention Warehouse Tour with a visit to a facility of New Orleans Cold Storage, city and plantation tours, and a dinner cruise on a Mississippi river boat.

New Members

MohebiNew member Mohebi Logistics is a recently established logistics hub in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This warehouse facility is spread over an area of 51.000m² and offers temperature-controlled storage according to HACCP and ISO standards, 24/7 security and temperature monitoring, and a state-of-the-art IT and management information infrastructure. The company specializes in fast moving consumer goods and earlier this year was appointed by Nestlé Dubai as its service provider for Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

 

Also from the United Arab Emirates is Al Rowad Abersonfor Training & Development (UAE), which has recently joined as an associate member. This company´s objective is to improve the levels of management and technical skills in the workforce, through training and development. It conducts training in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and is expanding its operations to other countries in the region. Further, it has established cooperation with various renowned training  institutes worldwide.

VerburgWFLO Treasurer Derk van Mackelenbergh (right) recently welcomed Dutch Agricultural Minister Mrs. Verburg (right) at his Eemhaven facility in Rotterdam. The politician was on a working visit to the port, where she took a closer look at the Port Health Inspection and Eurofrigo's veterinary checkpoint.

 

LimerickThe entire storage areas and loading bay, and all stock at Limerick Cold Store Ltd. in Ireland were destroyed in a major fire last month. There were no personal accidents, but the flames caused millions of euro in damage to the facility.

 

Unilever´s new supply chain model

One of the presentations at the Amsterdam cold chain program discussed Unilever's new supply chain model, which is aimed at increasing margins, reducing costs, and improving service, for instance by optimization of the distribution network. By reducing the number of warehouses - from 600 in 2005 to 250 in 2010 - Unilever is looking to save 15 percent on  logistics costs. More

WMS calculates shortest picking route

Dr. Kees Jan Roodbergen, who recently joined the WFLO Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) as a logistics and operations management specialist, has developed an algorithm that can help to calculate the shortest picking route in the warehouse. Software supplier Yanta has incorporated this algorithm in its warehouse management systems and simulations have revealed that it can reduce walking distances with 12 percent. When smaller orders are combined into larger batches, even more time can be saved.

Kuehne + Nagel sells 22 European warehouse locations

Logistics service provider Kuehne + Nagel and real estate company Goodman have entered into a sale and lease-back agreement for 22 distribution centers in Europe. The total transaction value is about € 220 million with an average lease-back period of five years. More

Europeans willing to pay more for green products

About three quarters of Europeans declare they would buy green products even if they would have to pay a bit more, according to a recent Eurobarometer survey. On average only 17% of Europeans say they bought environmentally-friendly products recently, which means that almost 60% say they are willing to switch to green products, but have not yet done so. More

Website on alternative for HCFC-22 fluids

On January 1, 2010, the European ban on HCFC-22 fluids in refrigeration equipment comes into effect. Forane 427A refrigerant fluid is used as an alternative. Chemical company Arkema has set up the website www.forane427a.com that gives end-users in Europe technical and environmental information on Forane 427A to assist them with the retrofitting of their refrigeration equipment.

Green supply chain partner becoming more popular

More and more companies take concrete measures to establish a green supply chain. Decreasing energy consumption and choosing "green" supply chain partners are the most popular measures, according to a report by the Aberdeen Group. More
