Convention Florida highly
appreciated by European delegates |
|
Among the 700 delegates at this year´s
annual IARW convention in Marco Island (Florida),
the 30 European participants really
appreciated the program that featured
business focus sessions, presentations
by members of the Scientific Advisory
Council (SAC), networking receptions, a
trade show with over 90 exhibitors, and
a farewell gala dinner. There was much
attention for green logistics and
sustainability in refrigerated
warehousing, but also for labor and
energy issues. Several presentations are
already available on the
IARW
website. During
the general sessions Derk van
Mackelenbergh (Eurofrigo /
Netherlands) was elected vice chairman
of the World Food
Logistics
Organization and Dr. Kees Jan
Roodbergen (RSM Erasmus
University / Netherlands), twice a
speaker at the European Education
Programs, became a member of the SAC.
Prior to this event, a group of European
and international members visited a
facility of NOCS in the port of New
Orleans. The 2009 Convention will be in
Rancho Mirage/California. |

Frigoscandia Distribution
has signed a 2-year agreement with
Unilever for the annual transportation
of about 22,000 tons of goods, mostly
frozen food, between Scandinavia and
Italy. The products are distributed via
Frigoscandia Distribution's intermodal
rail solution, which combines rail and
road transport and offers Unilever an
opportunity to reduce its fossil
emission on these routes by over 40%.
This environmental aspect is important
for Unilever, which has made "green
entrepreneurship" an essential part of
its new supply chain policy.
Norish
PLC has announced the
purchase of cold store in
Gillingham. The facility has a
capacity of 6.000 pallet positions
and offers frozen/chilled storage
and blast freezing. With this
acquisition, Norish now owns a total
of 7 facilities.
Reed
Boardall Cold Storage has
recently taken into use 62 new
trailers; 50 are single deck
with a 26-pallet capacity and 12
are 40-pallet double-deck
trailers with lifting decks. All
the double-decks have a sloping
aerodynamic roof with
photovoltaic solar panel to
charge the lifting deck battery.

EU working on more liberal cabotage
rules |
|
EU transport ministers are working on
liberalizing the rules for cabotage.
Now, the number of trips foreign trucks
can make after delivery of the first
load, are limited. Further, in most
countries trucks are not allowed to pick
up a back load and return home empty.
Big trucking nations like Germany, the
Netherlands, and the Czech Republic have
asked that those rules would be
abandoned, also because they go against
the EU goal of cutting down on carbon
emissions. It has now been proposed that
foreign truck can make three trips in
the country of delivery. A formal
decision is expected in June. If the
regulations are changed, they will come
into force in 2014. |

German cold storage occupancy rates
increased in 2007 |
|
VDKL,
the German cold storage association, has
released occupancy figures for 2007 and
an overview of the type of products
stored in the affiliated refrigerated
warehouses throughout the country. The
average occupancy rate in 2007 was 73.4
percent, a growth of 1.5 percent
compared to 2006. Most space was
allocated to general frozen food items,
ice cream and seafood. The interest in
frozen poultry/lamb/game dropped
substantially; from 9.0 in 2006 to 4.6
in 2007. (Click on image to enlarge) |

Nestlé Italy tracks ice cream with RFID |
|
Nestlé Italy is expanding a pilot
project with temperature-sensing
RFID-tags that track ice cream as it
moves from production factories to
distribution centers and supermarkets.
The pilot started a year ago with tags
being placed at a selection of cold
stores, production plants, trucks,
primary and secondary distribution
centers, and shops. According to the
company, the obtained data can assist
with improving product quality and
transportation conditions, reducing
spoilage and thus insurance premiums,
and increasing energy efficiency because
of more exact temperature readings. The
company therefore intends to expand the
pilot to cover all production plants,
its primary distribution centers, 150
large trucks, and 150 freezers.

Material handling equipment business is
booming |
|

For suppliers of material handling
equipment 2007 was an excellent year.
The top 20 of best ranked companies saw
their total revenue increase with $14.4
billion. With 14 companies in the list,
European suppliers continue to dominate
the industry.
Compared to 2006, there were no changes
in the top 5, with Schaefer Holding
International still firm on #1. |

Strong growth European logistics real
estate market |
|
The logistics real estate market
increased with 19 percent in 2007 in 18
European countries, according to a
report by Jones Lang Lasalle, mainly
because of outsourcing of logistic
activities and a substantial growth of
the retail market. Other factors are the
expansion of the EU, globalization of
the supply chain and increasing trade
with Asia. The Central and Eastern
European markets were the fastest
growers and the report predicts that,
due to a need for modern distribution
and warehousing, countries like Slovakia,
Croatia, Greece and Turkey will become
important in the coming years. |
