On August 13-15, 2008, the Southern African Refrigerated Distribution Association (SARDA), the World Food Logistics Organization (WFLO), Louisiana State University (LSU) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Partnerships for Food Industry Development Project (PFID), will present the Cold Store Operations Short Course. This unique course has been designed specifically for middle and lower level managers and senior level supervisors of cold storage facilities in South Africa and the Southern African region.

This 2.5-day course, designed to equip cold store employees with the knowledge they need to make sound, everyday operating decisions, covered topics including:

  • Cold Store Operations—maximizing space, streamlining product flow, controlling inventory

  • Food Science Basics—dealing with odor transfer, extending product shelf life, maintaining product quality

  • Energy Management—avoiding demand charges, tips for reducing consumption

  • Fundamentals of Refrigeration—selecting refrigerants, reading controls, diagramming the system

  • Crisis Management—responding to ammonia leaks, power outages, natural disasters

  • And more!
