Is Africa the Next Big Thing?
In global trade, companies are always looking for new opportunities. J. Joseph Grandmaison predicted in a recent article for Shipping Digest that Africa will soon present real opportunities for exporters. According to Grandmaison, "U.S. companies ought to be entering these markets now as African countries are developing their infrastructure and industries."

How fast are African economies growing? The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development noted in their "Africa Economic Outlook in 2008" that "in 2007 the continent registered 5.7 per cent GDP growth." And according to the African Growth and Opportunity Act website, "U.S. exports increased by 19 percent to $14.4 billion" and "U.S. imports in 2007 increased by 14 percent to $67.4 billion." This growth shows no sign of slowing.

All this stands as strong evidence that Africa should at least be on your company's radar.
Let GCCA Be Your Doorway to Africa
The Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) has already completed several development projects and hosted events in Africa. This past August, GCCA Core Partner the World Food Logistics Organization held a Cold Storage Short Course in Durban, South Africa. Over 45 participants from South Africa, Ghana, and Botswana attended the event. Some of the topics that were covered were food science basics, fundamentals of refrigeration, and crisis management. GCCA also recently implemented a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) mitigation and prevention project in Zambia and Togo. This project was designed to improve the ability of associations to provide vital services to their members in Zambia and Togo.

Through these projects and others GCCA has helped build cold chain infrastructure and fostered business opportunities for members in Africa. To learn more and find out how you can participate in GCCA's international development work, contact Richard Tracy at +1 703 373 4300.

Preventing Thermal Abuse with Temperature Monitoring
New IRTA Member Procuro has developed a logistics management tool called PIMM™ to solve operational problems in a variety of industries. Recently, Procuro conducted multiple tests of its PIMM Outbound Delivery System with four different distributors from April - December 2007. PIMM Trailer Management Controllers were installed to support real-time temperature monitoring on approximately 35 multi-compartment trailers.

Procuro made several recommendations based on their experiments. Thermal abuse can be prevented by implementing and monitoring the operating procedures which DCs already nominally have in place. Unmonitored deliveries lead to unintentional but very definite conditions of thermal abuse. Trust but verify! Such procedures should include: Reefer Settings, Pre-cooling, Overnight Storage (Trailer Staging), and Real-time Trailer Management (ambient air and product temperature). There is a clear and measurable relationship between product and ambient air temperature over the stages of the delivery that can be used to create the most appropriate and economical operating procedures. Transportation Tally: Troubling Trucking Statistics
Tally

A report called "An Unsustainable Model: Why Shippers and Carriers Must Innovate to Succeed" by Adrian Gonzalez for ARC Advisory Group on behalf of LeanLogistics collected some troubling trucking industry statistics. Download full report.

  • According to the American Trucking Association, there were almost 1,000 carrier bankruptcies in Q1 2008, compared to 1,200 in all of 2007.
  • Large trucking companies are reducing their fleets considerably. For example, JB Hunt reduced its fleet by 22 percent, or 1,085 units, in the first half of 2008.
  • Truck sales declined by almost 47 percent in 2007 compared to 2006, when carriers bought a record number of trucks before the new emissions standards took effect.
  • The U.S. Department of Transportation forecasts that over 18.1 billion tons of freight will travel by highway in the year 2020, a 75 per-cent increase from 1998.

Quote of the Month: Shift in Power in Global Market
Quote"Between the years 2005 and 2050, nine countries alone are expected to account for nearly half of the world's population growth. The U.S. is the only developed country." - Erin Daley, U.S. Meat Export Federation economist, speaking at the 2008 IMS World Meat Congress in Cape Town, South Africa.
